Fun times. When building a house, this is where things really add up. Base price is just the beginning. I think I added more options this time around, but I will say there were less structural changes available. No 3rd garage, no sitting room, no 9 foot basement ceilings. However, i got the finished basement for free, as well as the sitting room (this was also free in the last house). I think the only structural change i made was the 2 foot garage extension.
There were some strange options also. The bathroom rough-in for the basement is for a full bathroom, including tub/shower. Mind you, there’s no option to add a bedroom to the basement, nor is there a rough-in option for just sink/toilet. Seems odd to me.
Options not available/only available via Custom Request(CR). I had multiple CR’s. They included:
- Natural gas outside hookup for gas grill – This got moved to the garage so when I brew I’ll have easy access to gas. No more propane tanks! Yay! I will get this done after the fact. It was a last min choice to move this to the garage during the pre-construction meeting as it’ll be easier to add a 2nd line to the back of the house than inside the garage.
- Hose bib in garage – This is mostly for brewing. Again, easy access to the main ingredient in beer! Woot!
- Utility Tub in Laundry Room – They wanted $1500 to install a utility tub! Crazy! I think they just didn’t want to do it. A plumber will likely charge me only $200 to install this. Add a nice tub and it’s less than $400 total. WTF?
- 2nd shower head & controller in owner’s bath – Oddly, this is standard in some homes ( I saw it in one of the models, and what made me want it), yet not a regular option if you choose the owner’s shower setup. I don’t get it.
